Few Important Things you should know about the Brakes & Clutches used in EOT Crane and Wire Rope Hoists.
Brakes & Clutches are Devices used for Holding the Load in any Position.
Brakes are Important Load Holding Devices in any Lifting Machinery. Hoisting Mechanism or Lifting is an Anti-Gravitational Operation and failing to hold the Lifted Load may invite un-wanted Accidents.
Shafting rotation of Electric Motor (Prime Mover) in EOT Crane or Electric Wire Rope Hoists, is hold on Applying Brake and as such Load is Hold where ever it is and as in the position. Hoisting Safety is much dependent on the Brake Assembly.
In case of Travel Mechanism, Brake Assembly is incorporated to stop the entire Crane or Electric Hoist with or without Load. Here, entire Crane or Hoist with or without LOAD is put on Hold at the place where it is and not allowed to move.
Normally, Fail to Safe types of Brake Assembly is incorporated in Hoisting Mechanism or Travel Mechanisms. FAIL TO SAFE means, when ever Electric Power Supply is cut off Brake is acted or say Brake is APPLIED. Supply is Failed, Machine holds the Load safely.
Poorly Performing Brakes in Lifting Machinery are not recommended from Safety Point of View. Damaged or Poorly Performing Brakes should be immediately changed or replaced with new one. Crane Operator Safety is attained by this.
Proper Brake Selection criteria for Hoisting Mechanism, should be adopted in order to gain Crane Safety Level Higher Standards..
It is mandatory to incorporate Brakes in Travel Mechanism where Wind Velocity is very High to prevent free running of the Crane on Gantry. However, now a days, Most Crane Manufacturers are providing Brakes in both Travel Mechanism also for Crane Safety.
